The Ladies 3’s travelled to Winchester today to play Romsey. After starting the day with only 8 players Romsey showed great sportsmanship to give us another player and loaned us a stick so it was 9 vs 11. We started the first half strong using the space well but a short corner shortly into the half for Romsey led to the first goal of the match but it only took around 5 minutes before Amber Wilmott equalised. Then Amber Wilmott was on hand for her second of the match five minutes later after a strong bit of play from the team. Carole McFarlane was playing brilliantly with some great use of space passing the ball around upfront. Soon enough the Island scored again with Georgie Mack scoring a tap in after Carole McFarlane missed an open goal. No more goals meant the Island went into the break leading 3-1.
The second half followed with a fourth goal, this time from Hannah Kerley, who worked the ball brilliantly on the wings. Romsey did have a great chance to get a foot back in the game after the side conceded a penalty flick, however the opportunity wasn’t converted. The defence consisting of Vicki Brodowska, Beth Bransom, Kaitlyn McFarlane and our honorary Island player from Romsey (Emily) remained very strong throughout and with Tia Shutler in goal nothing was getting past us. The Wightlink Player of the Match had to go to the entire team for such great teamwork throughout the whole game. And this week it’s shared donkey between Carole McFarlane for missing an open goal when the ball wasn’t even moving and Beth Bransom for tripping over whilst standing in goal waiting for Romsey to take their short corner and being sent back to the half way line. Great game Ladies, lovely use of space in a tough game with a lack of players. Special thanks to Harry Kirby for stepping in to drive at the last minute and umpiring so well. 4-1 overall!
