The Ladies 3s were away to Portsmouth today on a beautiful sunny day with 10 players. Portsmouth were a hand full the first few minutes of the game and tested Tia Shuttler in the Island’s goalbut she was up to the task. Good work from Vicki Brodowska and Kaitlyn McFarlane in the defence playing the ball out and up to Georgie Mack and Wightlink Player of the Match Hannah Kerley on the wings who both had great runs weaving through several players all though the game. After winning a couple of short corners the Island were still only 0-0 at half time.
In the second half the Island’s ladies went out with a renewed purpose and Hannah Kerley linked up with Amelia Parker and put in cross after cross to upset the Portsmouth defence and Carole McFarlane and Amber Wilmott both fought hard to get the Island’s first goal with Amber Wilmott getting the last touch on one to put the team 1-0 up. Feeling confident the Island pushed hard for a second goal which was eventually put across the line with a great strike by Amber Wilmott for her second of the match. Hannah Kerley cemented her excellent performance when she went on one of her meandering runs past several players, passed it, received it back and struck it hard into the oppositions goal for the Island’s 3rd and final goal. Full Time 3-0 to the Isle of Wight. Highlights of the game were Beth Branson taking a 16 hit to her self and jogging up the pitch into the oppositions half completely unchallenged as noone had realised she had taken the free hit until she was almost in the opposition’s D! A mention for the captain Cathy Somekh for diving across the face of goal in the final minutes of the game to save a goal on the line and push it wide.
