On a breezy morning the Ladies 2s travelled to Winchester to take on West Meon. The game started off strong with West Meon applying pressure from the get go however this did not faze the Island. Lovely runs and passes from Lotty Green, Cleo McMeechan, Emily Lord, Megan Bridger, Alice Aldridge-Snell and Gracie Boyd startled the opposition and nearly led to a goal. The first half was evenly matched with end to end play and continous pressure from both sides, but with no goals it was 0-0 at half time.
The second half started off the same as the first, brilliant clearances from Lucy Townend, Lola Marfleet, Poppy Gallerwood and goalie Sophie Bruce led to the Island’s possible first goal, but the team just could not find the back of the net. Constant pressure from the Island meant that West Meon got a little fustrated but the Island kept their cool and played how we knew we could. However, Meon were given an interesting short corner which led to them scoring, even though there was a question mark as to whether it went out or not! Not fazed by this, the Island upped the pressue and brilliant play from Emily Lord in midfield gave the Island several chances but the team still could not find the back of the net! After a barrage of shots on goal, Sophie Bruce pulled out the save of the season with a dive jump tipping the ball over the top of the net! After some interesting umpiring decisions, the Island started to lose their cool which allowed Meon to score their second. Overall the team played amazingly well. The Wightlink Player of the Match was Sophie Bruce for her outstanding saves and excellent performance.
