After an interesting first attempt at this match, which ended up as a return trip on the ferry a couple of weeks previously, the team finally managed to get to play against the Southampton Uni students.

The first half started very strongly for the Island team as the midfield of Dan Attrill and Rebeun Smallwood-Butler (making only their second appearances in the seniors) alongside Steve Holbrook and captain Mike Dodds started creating early inroads and supplying chances to the forward line of Scott Bashford and the world cup veteran star John Pearson! Goals came a plenty during this dominance with Scott Bashford adding to his impressive tally (not bad for a keeper!), along with Mike Dodds, the impressive Will Mew and Dan Attrill netting the others. It was nothing less than the Island deserved for their efforts.

At half time the weather started to deteriorate as the downpour began in earnest. The play got a little sloppy and legs got tired – stick grip became harder and at one point a Southampton player managed to launch their stick into the air when attempting a sideline hit. The backline of Lewis Wells in goal, makeshift right back Charlie Randerson, Carl Joyce, Will Mew and Toby Noyes – who had little to do defensively in the first half – found themselves under increasing pressure. Pressure which eventually told as Southampton Uni managed to pull a goal back. The team however were not to be denied and although they did create a few more chances the match finished 4-1 to the Island side.

Wightlink and DineWight Man of the Match went to Will Mew, who had an outstanding debut match and capped his performance with a well taken goal.
