The island side had the very early run of play allowing them to settle and pass the ball around with ease. Southampton uni soon increased their intensity though and the Island dealt with this pressure with some fine defensive play from Wightlink Man of the Match Tomas Turjanicová earning him a permanent spot in defence. The Island looked good on the break, but the attacking line of Stephen Woodford, Tom Turney and Bailey Woodford couldn’t find the opening. The first half continued with much toing and froing until with two minutes on the clock the Island were awarded a penalty corner and Stephen Woodford deflected the strike into the top corner of the goal.
Early into the second half it was clear to see that the opposition were going to try and tire out the Island, using their numerical advantage in the form of substitutes. However, the midfield of Joe Arnold, Peter Wright, Alex Breach and Lewis Heavan-Gandy were equal in terms of fitness and able to survive the onslaught. It wasn’t until the University side were awarded a free hit that evaded Island sticks that they scored. Both teams went for the win and despite numerous short corners superbly defended by Scott Bashford, Stuart Allen and Patrick Butt the opposition couldn’t find the winner and nor could the Island and so the game ended in a well deserved draw.
