The Island stepped up to the challenge with panache and ease after a subpar first half to the season against second in the table Romsey. The midfield of Joe Arnold, Lewis Heavan-Gandy, Lucas Venga and Alex Breach piled on the pressure clearly influenced by the work rate of Wightlink Man of the Match Stuart Allen, Pat Butt and Sam Challis in defence. The talented trio of Stephen Woodford, Tom Turney and Tom Young crafted a flawless almost organic performance in the first half to equalise soon after a defensive howler, with Tom Turney scoring.
The opposition picked up a further two goals in the second half against the follow of play and an athletic Scott Bashford in the goal. Unfortunately they followed up this by converting a penalty corner and the fresh legs of Peter Wright and Tomas Turjanica despite brilliant play weren’t enough. The Island put Romsey on notice when Lukas Venga flicked the ball into the back of the net, but with the minutes running out the Island regretted not having converted their earlier chances. To say that the scoreline didn’t reflect the dazzling visual unfolding on the pitch today would be an understatement.
