The Men’s 1st team faced top of the table Poole and early exchanges demonstrated that this would be a physical encounter. The Island held up well to a high pressing Poole outfit, whose initial tactic was to throw numerous aerials into the Island’s half. With the Island having difficulty linking up their passes it was only a matter of time until Poole latched onto a loose ball and secured their first goal. The Island found their feet after the first 10 minutes and looked a more physical team. However, possession was the Island’s weakness during the match and they were dealt a further three blows before the halftime whistle.
After the team talk and some early re-organisation of positions, the Island started to build their attacking game and were rewarded after nice link up play between Stuart Allen, Lewis Heaven-Gandy, Lucas Fuchs, Tomas Turjanica and Steve Woodford who performed a reverse stick swan drive catapulting the ball in off the cross bar. Alex Breach was on hand to retrieve the ball for a quick restart sensing the resurgent Island. Sam Challis was a dominant force to be reckoned with at the back and frustrated the Poole attack along with Wightlink Man of the Match Scott Bashford who pulled off fantastic saves in goal to keep the Island in the hunt. Peter Wright, Jordan Hambling and Joe Arnold put in a great performance in the midfield building their repertoire of skills. Despite this though the Island were unable to close the scoreline and the match finished 1-4 to Poole. Heads held high the Island look forward to their next match.
